How to Make an Old Laptop Feel Faster: 9 Fixes That Actually Work

An old laptop rarely becomes slow overnight. More often, small delays pile up: too many startup apps, a crowded drive, a browser carrying months of baggage, and a cooling fan that has quietly collected dust.

That is good news, because it means you may not need a new computer yet. Before spending money, set aside about 45 minutes and work through the fixes below in order. The order matters. There is little value in buying more memory if one badly behaved app is using the processor all day.

This guide is written for everyday Windows and macOS laptops used for browsing, documents, video calls, streaming and light creative work. It will not turn a ten-year-old machine into a gaming PC, but it can make a frustrating computer feel dependable again.

Start with a ten-minute diagnosis

Restart the laptop first. A restart clears temporary problems and gives you a more honest baseline than waking a machine that has been sleeping for two weeks.

Next, open Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS. Leave it visible while you do the thing that normally feels slow. Look at three columns: processor, memory and disk activity.
